Getting Ready for College

Congratulations on the the start of your journey to Washington State University! We are looking forward to seeing you on campus soon.

When you enroll at WSU, you’ll be encouraged to explore different academic interests and take classes on new topics. The UCORE common graduation requirements provide a framework for first-year students and plenty of opportunity to grow and learn.

Before you arrive on campus for orientation, you may have already changed your mind about your area of interest. That’s okay. We’ll get you connected to the appropriate advisors.

When it’s time to register for your first semester of classes, if you are not certain what you want to major in, that’s okay, too! We are here to guide you and help you make a decision that fits you.

Can I start the exploration process now?

Absolutely! The classroom is not the only place to explore majors or careers, so getting a head start on this “homework” will give you an advantage when it comes to registering for classes.

> Take a stroll through the WSU fields of study website and gather information about the subjects you find interesting. Right now, think in terms of learning new things and not specific career paths.

> Think actively about yourself and your values, such as:

  • Which classes in high school did you like best? Why?
  • What were your most difficult classes in high school? Why?
  • What kinds of extracurricular activities do you like? Why?
  • What kind of community service do you enjoy? Why?
  • What kinds of local/world problems do you want to solve? Why?
  • What fields of study are you interested in learning about? Why?

If you find it difficult to answer these questions, that’s okay. Take some time to think about these throughout your exploration process. Another tactic to try is adding “not” to the questions  (e.g. What kinds of extracurricular activities do NOT enjoy?) and see how your answers change.
